Stunning Horse and Rider Session with Rebecca and Echo

This past week, I had the privilege of traveling to West Palm Beach/Wellington, Florida for The Equine Photography Retreat, a gathering of top horse photographers from around the globe. It was a truly amazing week with absolutely magical real-life unicorns to photograph.

This gorgeous pair is made up of Ecuador XXIV, also known as ‘Eco’, an Andalusian stallion, and Becca, our gorgeous model. They were a joy to capture in art.

Spring is on its way here in Texas. It’s definitely not too early to start planning and scheduling your Horse & Rider Session!

Dog-friendly Locales in Lubbock, Texas

When it’s time for coffee with a friend or a dinner date, or even a visit to the lake, you don't have to leave your tail-wagging friends back at home! Lubbock is becoming more and more dog friendly, with a number of locations allowing our furry friends, at least in their outdoor areas. Kudos to those places letting us dog-lovers enjoy great food and a drink while continuing to hang with our social pups.

Check out the list below to find some of the best eateries in town that welcome your fur-baby (though likely just on the patio). Following the list of restaurants is a list of other dog-friendly spots in the 806!

Before venturing out, you may want to call ahead and confirm what each specific location allows, such as only on the patio or if they have special ‘dog’ days.

Don’t forget that hot pavement will burn a dog’s paws. In fact, dog paws can be just as sensitive as human feet and burn easily! So, stay in the shade or walk on the grass in hot weather. You may want to try dog shoes or buy some Paw Wax (yes, it’s a real product!) for your dog’s feet. If you are going somewhere that water won’t be provided, then bring a water bottle and a travel bowl with you to refresh your pup.

If YOUR place of business welcomes the fidos of West Texas, comment below to add your name to the list! It’s exciting to see this list of pet-friendly locales growing. And just a hint—welcoming customers that ‘woof’ is good for business.

9/30/19: Updated to add some locations given to me by readers— thanks y’all! I appreciate the input.

Ranch Life in Post, Texas

Ranch life. It’s hard work. Satisfying work.

Welcome to a beautiful piece of land in Post, Texas. This property, plus other property owned in Crosbyton, Texas as well as other locales around the area, has been owned by the same family for almost 100 years.

This family works hard for what they have.

Today was weaning and vaccination day for the cows and calves brought in from the outer fields. Babies were encouraged to head to new pens and then were vaccinated and dewormed. Mommas were pregnancy tested and then sent back to pasture.

Getting Run Over By A Miniature Horse... Well, Almost.

Two nights ago, I drove north to New Deal, Texas to meet a couple of miniature horses that I was being allowed to photograph. The owners weren’t home yet, but I was told to go ahead into the pasture and meet them. From afar, I saw two minis in a tall stand of grass— their backs hardly higher than the grass.

I whistled. That was all it took. The pinto mare came running— fast!! And I mean running. I’ve never had a horse or pony respond so fast to a human. She about ran me over and checked me out, looking for a butt scratch or food. The black mare never took notice.

Then, a third head popped up— a paint foal!! Oh, my goodness. A D O R A B L E! I couldn’t believe it, as I didn’t know the owners even had a foal. She was beyond cute and as obnoxiously friendly as the paint mare. I assumed, of course, that the paint mare with her was her mom. Nope. The owners showed up right after and informed me that the black mare was her dam. The paint mare had just taken her over.

I learned that the paint mare was about four years old and was named Cupcake. She was the first minis the family had gotten. Then, came the black mare, who is about 15 years old and permanently lame, with her foal. Momma is “Muffin” — so, no surprises, the foal was named “Cookie.” Too fun!

I spent my time drooling over the cuteness while trying hard to not get run over by over-friendly equines.

Five Fabulous and Easy-To-Make Homemade Dog Treats

When photography my clients’ pets, I make sure to provide healthy and wholesome, organic treats. A favorite of the dogs I’ve had in my studio is freeze dried liver!

As often as possible, I have taken to making homemade treats. It’s not as convenient as popping into the local pet food store, but it allows me to avoid any allergens and make them as yummy and healthy as possible.

EDIT: By the way, check out this article: https://yourdogadvisor.com/best-peanut-butter-for-dogs/ for some information on selecting a safe peanut butter for your dog.

You, too, can make your own homemade doggie snacks! Here are five recipes to try:

1.         Peanut Butter Bacon Dog Donuts

Yes, donuts for dogs! Fido will not be able to resist these—they have yogurt frosting and bacon sprinkles!! These fun treats use just a few ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry.

Life is awesome.

https://www.sunnydayfamily.com/2017/01/dog-donuts.html

If you need a donut pan, you can easily find one on Amazon (and it will be at your front door in no time!).

2.         Spinach, Carrot, and Zucchini Dog Treats

Here’s a treat packed with veggies, so your pups can embrace their nutrition!

https://damndelicious.net/2015/06/10/spinach-carrot-and-zucchini-dog-treats/

3.         Peanut Butter and Bacon Glazed Bones

How could any pup resist bacon glaze? This makes a beautiful treat, and it makes a LOT of them; like 30 or so large dog treats. Have fun baking!

Do you need a bone cookie cutter set? Try this one: Fox Run 3683 Dog Bone Cookie Cutter Set, Stainless Steel, 3-Piece

4.        Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Today just happens to be National Peanut Butter Day, and pups love peanut butter! This is a super simple recipe and only takes about thirty minutes to make. The recipe yields about 120 mini bones.

https://www.eatingbirdfood.com/homemade-peanut-butter-dog-treats-recipe/

5.         Paw-Print Dog Treats

These are adorable! Check out the recipe, and Martha Stewart is going to tell you how to imprint them with a paw-print! This recipe that makes about 24 bones.

If you make any of these, I’d love to see your results!

Pro Bono Session at 4 Legged Friends of Lubbock

Pro Bono Session at 4 Legged Friends of Lubbock

One commitment that I have made as a photographer is to participate in the organization, HeARTs Speak— a nationally recognized nonprofit that’s uniting art and advocacy to increase the visibility of shelter animals. First impressions have a huge impact in the adoption rates of shelter pets. Great images give homeless animals an improved chance of finding a forever home and not being put down because of they haven’t yet been adopted. As often as possible, I will provide my services pro bono to animal shelters or rescues who need my services.
