Five Tips on How to Prepare Your Dog for a Photo Session

There are many ways to help ensure that your photo session with your pet goes well, and your photographer captures the best possible images. Here are five suggestions on how to prepare your dog for his or her photoshoot.

1. BRUSH UP ON BASIC OBEDIENCE SKILLS

Don’t let that scare you! I’m not saying that your dog must come to the session having just graduated from puppy obedience school! I’m simply suggesting that if you have time to work on simple SIT and STAY commands, getting great photographs will be a bit easier for the photographer! Use positive reinforcement to encourage the skills and practice daily in short sessions of about 10-15 minutes each.

2. COME CLEAN

Okay, I’m not asking you to confess your faults! I’m just encouraging you to bring clean animal (or human) models! There’s an old saying that the camera sees everything. So true. Things you would never imagine that would show up, definitely do when we are looking at the images.

Plan on getting your dog trimmed or clipped prior to the session or give him (or her) a bath and brush his coat. Make sure his collar is not only clean but one that you would proud to see in the resulting images.

3. BRING BELOVED TOYS AND TREATS

Some dogs are more food motivated. Some are obsessed with their toys. Bring with you whatever your dog loves and that will capture his attention. I’ll have healthy treats available, so you don’t have to bring these but sometimes your pet knows what he or she loves best.

4. COME HUNGRY AND A BIT TIRED

That’s the dog, not you! It’s helpful if your dog comes a bit hungry so that they’re excited about those treats. So unless you need to feed your dog due to health or age concerns, try not to feed your pet soon before the session.

As well, plan to exercise your dog before the session. Not so much that he or she is worn out and a tongue is hanging out, but enough to lessen over excitement.

5. FEEL FREE TO BRING PROPS FOR THE SESSION

You are welcome to bring a favorite prop or clothing that you want used in the session. Just remember to have it clean and make sure clothing fits prior to coming to the studio.
